The
Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills was established
in 2003. Since that time it has played host to some of North
and South Carolina's top junior golfers. The Joe Cheves
competition date will always be the weekend after Labor Day.
The JCJI was conceived to not just be another junior golf
tournament. It's not a first-come, first-served entry process.
The concept was to hold an event that players had to earn
their way to play. In essence, bringing together an elite
field. A set of qualifying criteria was formed with help
from the Carolinas Golf Association and the Tarheel Youth
Golf Association.
The idea was presented to the Mimosa Hills Board of Directors
in February 2003 and they unanimously endorsed the tournament.
The only thing the Board insisted was that the official
name of this event be: The Joe Cheves Junior Invitational
@ Mimosa Hills.
Joe Cheves was head pro at Mimosa Hills from 1951-1981. He's a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, as well as the Carolina PGA and Carolinas Golf Halls of Fame. Cheves, who passed away on July 31st, 2007, at age 89, loved Mimosa Hills with all his heart and soul. He was a strong advocate and supporter of junior golfers for 70 years. We hope you have the chance one day to be a player at the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills.

Final Scores
(Sept. 6-7)
After
finishing 36-holes of play, deadlocked at 146 (2-over),
US Junior Qualifiers Kandy Carland (72-74) of Etowah, NC
and Blythe Worley (71-75) of Greenville, NC settled the
issue in a playoff for top honors at the first annual Joe
Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills in Morganton,
NC. In the ensuing sudden-death playoff, Carland sank a
10 foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to defeat Worley,
the reigning CGA North Carolina Junior Champion. Corrine
Carr of Pinehurst, NC (76-71) finished one shot back.
Two-time
CGA North Carolina Junior Champion Barden Berry of Kinston,
NC won the inaugural Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa
Hills in Morganton, NC. Berry toured the 1929 Donald Ross
designed course in five-under for the 36-hole event, shooting
71-68. Finishing second was 2003 Carolinas Junior Player
of the Year Vince Hatfield (70-71) of Greenwood, SC. Weston
Way of Liberty, NC, the 2001 CGA Carolinas Junior Champion,
took third (71-71).
