The
Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills was established
in 2003. Since that time it has played host to some of North
and South Carolina's top junior golfers. The Joe Cheves
competition date will always be the weekend after Labor Day.
The JCJI was conceived to not just be another junior golf
tournament. It's not a first-come, first-served entry process.
The concept was to hold an event that players had to earn
their way to play. In essence, bringing together an elite
field. A set of qualifying criteria was formed with help
from the Carolinas Golf Association and the Tarheel Youth
Golf Association.
The idea was presented to the Mimosa Hills Board of Directors
in February 2003 and they unanimously endorsed the tournament.
The only thing the Board insisted was that the official
name of this event be: The Joe Cheves Junior Invitational
@ Mimosa Hills.
Joe Cheves was head pro at Mimosa Hills from 1951-1981. He's a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, as well as the Carolina PGA and Carolinas Golf Halls of Fame. Cheves, who passed away on July 31st, 2007, at age 89, loved Mimosa Hills with all his heart and soul. He was a strong advocate and supporter of junior golfers for 70 years. We hope you have the chance one day to be a player at the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills.
A
blistering final round back-nine 31 (5-under) propelled
Blair Lamb (2005) to victory in the second annual Joe Cheves
Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills in Morganton, NC. Down
by five with nine holes to play, Lamb, from Flat Rock, NC,
birdied #11, #12, #13, #14 and #18 to overtake runnerup
Corrine Carr of Pinehurst, NC. Carr (2006) held a two-shot
lead playing #18, but her double-bogey combined with Lamb's
birdie gave the future Furman Paladin the victory over the
demanding, old-style 5,496-yard Mimosa layout. Lamb, a 2004
United States Junior Qualifier, shot 73-68=141, while Carr
the 2004 North-South Junior Champion fired 71-71=142. Greensboro's
Jordan Ridge (2007) finished third at 147 (75-72), while
Ann Maness (2005) of Galivant's Ferry, SC, a Coastal Carolina
commitment, took fourth at 152 (75-77). Abby Bools (2006)
of Hickory, NC finished fifth (74-79=153).
