The
Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills was established
in 2003. Since that time it has played host to some of North
and South Carolina's top junior golfers. The Joe Cheves
competition date will always be the weekend after Labor Day.
The JCJI was conceived to not just be another junior golf
tournament. It's not a first-come, first-served entry process.
The concept was to hold an event that players had to earn
their way to play. In essence, bringing together an elite
field. A set of qualifying criteria was formed with help
from the Carolinas Golf Association and the Tarheel Youth
Golf Association.
The idea was presented to the Mimosa Hills Board of Directors
in February 2003 and they unanimously endorsed the tournament.
The only thing the Board insisted was that the official
name of this event be: The Joe Cheves Junior Invitational
@ Mimosa Hills.
Joe Cheves was head pro at Mimosa Hills from 1951-1981. He's a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, as well as the Carolina PGA and Carolinas Golf Halls of Fame. Cheves, who passed away on July 31st, 2007, at age 89, loved Mimosa Hills with all his heart and soul. He was a strong advocate and supporter of junior golfers for 70 years. We hope you have the chance one day to be a player at the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills.

Jacob Burger (2008) of Orangeburg, SC came across the border to capture the fourth annual Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills CC in Morganton, NC. Burger, who earlier in the summer captured the South Carolina Junior Championship and was the CGA Carolinas Junior runnerup, set a new tournament scoring record in the process, firing 70-68 for a six-under 138 total. Charlotte’s Stefan Brewer (68-71 / 2009) and McCuen Elmore (69-70 / 2007) of Cheraw, SC shared runner-up honors. Brewer displayed the kind of integrity and honesty that makes golf a great test of character. After opening with 68, he shot 71 in the final round, which momentarily tied Burger for the championship. Brewer called a penalty on himself in the scorer’s tent, which resulted in a one-shot penalty added to his score. Claremont’s Lance Wheeler (73-67 / 2007) had the tournament’s best round, posting a final-round 67 that vaulted him into a tie for fourth with Charlotte’s Robert Burrow (71-69 / 2007). A total of 16 players in the 63-player field shot par of better over the 77-year old Mimosa Hills layout that played at par 72 and 6,650 yards.
